The Cotswold Water Park Trust is currently offering two long term (9-12 month) volunteer ranger placements for students/graduates who are currently studying, or have recently completed a conservation or land-based course at HND, foundation degree, or degree-level (or equivalent). Applications are also accepted from candidates who have not followed an academic pathway but can demonstrate a commitment to gaining practical experience in this field. The role will involve working with our ranger team carrying out practical land management on our own nature reserves and public amenity sites, as well as across the wider Cotswold Water Park. Experience may also be gained through working with other staff, volunteers, corporate work parties, student groups, statutory bodies and other partners.
Interested applicants must submit a completed application form along with a brief CV. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to an informal interview. There is no application deadline for this post and places are subject to availability at the time of application.
This is an unsalaried post, and as such the voluntary working days per week will be reasonably flexible to allow students to retain part-time employment alongside the placement should they need to do so. However, a minimum commitment of 2 days per week is required in order to benefit from the training. There is currently no accommodation available for volunteers, so it is expected that candidates will live locally or have the means to support their own living arrangements.
On infrequent occasions, volunteers may be required to use their own transport, for which a mileage allowance will be reimbursed. There is no allowance for travel to and from home.
These placements are aimed at those seeking to gain structured and sustained practical experience in order to aid a career in the countryside sector. Previous long term volunteers have gone on to gain full employment with the likes of the Environment Agency, local Conservation Boards, and the local commercial countryside sector, as well as with our own ranger team.
We receive a large number of requests from school pupils and students about work experience opportunities, but as we are a very small organisation it is not possible for us to find placements for everyone. Sorry but we are not able to offer any work experience for students under the age of 18.
However, we do occasionally offer volunteer work placements for students looking for relevant experience, so it is always worth sending us an email to find out more.
