Spine Road Cycle Path
The original plan to link the cycle path was drawn up by the Cotswold Water Park Joint Committee several years ago and the Cotswold Water Park Society is working in partnership with Gloucestershire and Wiltshire County Council to link the network together.
The Western Spine Road Cycleway is being completed in phases. Phase 1 and 2 are now complete.
Phase 1: From the South Cerney Outdoor Education (Lake 12) to the County boundary including a link from the Lakeside Car park (Lake 12) alongside Broadway Lane.
Phase 2: Extends the route west to the North End cross roads.
These 2 phases were funded by the Local Transport Bid matched by contributions from Cotswold District Council, Wiltshire County Council and Section 106 contributions from developments along the route such as The Watermark, Four Pillars Hotel and the Lower Mill Estate.
Phase 3 will link the North End cross roads west wards through Keynes Country Park to Mill Lane. The National Children's Home land is earmarked for the route but the link will cost in the region of £80,000 to complete, money which is not currently available.
The Society is continually working to link up the cycleway. A bid was recently put into to the Living Land Mark Lottery to extend the cycle network in the Cotswold Water Park to link up the existing route. This is part of a larger bid to create a canal and cycle route from Swindon.
When completed the route will run from the A419 Latton by-pass to Lower Mill near Somerford Keynes, providing a safe cycle route along the entire Spine Road linking Water Park settlements, clubs and businesses. The route will enable cyclists to cycle to the Gateway Centre, the old disused railway line and Keynes County Park off road.
The route will display public art works in a series of large cats eyes in the shape of vertebrae to represent the spine of the Water Park. Within each cat's eye there will be an installation representing the history of the Water Park from the time of the Dinosaurs to the present day.
There are also plans for an off-road route from Keynes Country Park to the Ewen/South Cerney road to link to the quiet lanes running up through Siddington. It is estimated that this will take between 5 and 8 years.
