Corporate Responsibility and Team Building

npower team coppicing at Cleveland Lakes

npower works in partnership with Community Service Volunteers (CSV) to run a volunteering programme to enable employees to help with local community and conservation projects.

During September, npower helped the Society further by bringing along a team of 46 volunteers to help our rangers and biodiversity team manage the 6ha reed bed at Cleveland Lakes, which is now one of the top bird watching sites in the Cotswold Water Park.

The npower volunteers helped the Cotswold Water Park Society to clear areas of willow to enable re-growth of the reeds next Spring. The volunteers also helped to clear and re-create a large shallow pool within the site, that had become overgrown with vegetation.

The area to be cleared and coppiced was enormous; however the npower team were undeterred. After several back breaking hours they successfully cleared a vast area of land.

This work will create excellent habitat for birds such as the Marsh Harrier, elusive Bittern and the endearing Bearded Tit, both of which require dense reed beds for breeding. Furthermore, the recreated pool is now providing excellent feeding habitat for various winter ducks, Bittern and waders such as Snipe.
The Society relies heavily on the support of volunteers to achieve its conservation objectives and we would like to thank all the npower staff who volunteered, their help was invaluable.
