Countryside Ranger Required

The Cotswold Water Park Estate and Ranger Service Ltd, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Cotswold Water Park Society Ltd, (CWPS) it manages the CWPS estate (11 lakes on 240ha approx) on a contract basis and also carries out a variety of contracts for other landowners in the area.

The Cotswold Water Park, (CWP) is a large area of 146 lakes formed by gravel extraction over the last 60 years, with gravel deposits still to be dug over the next 40 years. The whole area covers 30 sq miles of the upper Thames catchment. Internationally important numbers of wildfowl visit the area through the winter, plus 10 SSSI lakes protect rare aquatic plants and wintering wildfowl.

The company is looking to recruit a permanent full time ranger to join our small and friendly team.
A practical outdoor's person is needed, prepared to work flexibly in the British weather, with a qualification in countryside management, good natural history skills and experience of practical habitat management. The candidate will be expected to interact with volunteers, landowners and the public in an enthusiastic manner.

The work is physical and varies with the season, plus limited weekend work is required.

Certification and extensive experience in Chainsaw use, certification in brushcutter, and pesticide application are essential. Experience of tractor, pedestrian mower and excavators are desirable.

A clean driving licence is essential, but experience of driving 4WD with trailers is desirable

Job Title: Countryside Ranger

Hours: 37.5 hours a week on average. There is some evening and weekend work. Time off in lieu is granted for additional hours worked, as agreed with the line manager

Holiday: 24 days per annum plus statutory days

Salary: 16-17K

Responsible to: Head Ranger

Responsible for: Volunteers, Temporary Staff

Location: Cotswold Water Park area

Main aims of the post:
•Assist the day-to-day management and improvement of recreation sites, Nature reserves, car parks, visitor centres and Public rights of way in the Cotswold Water Park and surrounding area
•To assist with developing volunteer groups and work programme
•To assist in project and contract work for other landowners

Responsibilities and Duties:
•To assist the Head Ranger in maintaining and improving CWPS sites through annual programme of practical work and maintenance tasks using a variety of tools to include chainsaws, Strimmers, hedgecutters and handtools.
•To make recommendations to line managers on content of work programmes, maintenance plans, and condition of facilities.
•To assist in the training and supervision of volunteers, and the supervising of projects carried out by them and temporary staff.
•To undertake basic maintenance of vehicles, power tools and equipment that does not require professional expertise.
•To assist in the implementation of the Health and Safety Statement
•To undertake any other appropriate duties , up to a level consistent with the principal responsibilities outlined above
•To assist and contribute towards effective communication streams within the organisation.
•To provide advice, information, interpretation and enforcement of byelaws to visitors, through site patrols, talks and guided walks.
•To ensure work is carried out to a high standard whilst conforming to the company’s Health and Safety policies.
