Take it in Terns
Common terns choose unusual nesting site at Keynes Park
A pair of Common Tern have chosen the edge of the cafe decking at Keynes Country Park for the site of their nest, much to the surprise of the rangers and wardens in the park. Tern like to lay their eggs on gravel where at least there is an amount of camouflage, but the decking is a new place! Last Sunday they laid one egg followed by another on Tuesday. and have been very active trying to keep people away from the site.
As all wild bird's nests are protected by law, and the eggs are in a very vulnerable site, the rangers have erected some fencing to keep the public out. They will be incubating the eggs for the next 2 weeks, and we hope that the young will survive in such an exposed place.
This weekend also sees a performance of the outdoor Shakespeare Twelfth Night by the Rain or Shine Theatre company on the decking, and we do hope that the show can go on !
