International artist coming soon!
Patrick Dougherty to work in Keynes Park
Brought to the UK by ‘In Our Element’, the Arts Development Programme for the Cotswold Water Park, Patrick Dougherty presents a rare opportunity for residents, children, students and those interested in willow to meet and work on the development for innovative willow designs with an inspiring international artist.
Sculptor Patrick Dougherty is known for large-scale installations that incorporate tree saplings. Working only with these saplings, the North Carolina based artist twists and wraps his medium to create large, organic sculptures. The surrounding environment and its given materials play a significant role in shaping his sculptures. Dougherty often uses saplings gathered near the installation site, adjusting his designs to the different ways local materials bend and respond in his hands. Dougherty also enjoys working with communities inspiring them to create ambitious and unusual sculptures with natural materials.
His sculpture reveals the influence of elements more commonly associated with drawing, which appear in the linear hatchings and patterns of the branches. His work always delights the viewer with the unexpected and mysterious.
Patrick will spend a week in the Cotswold Water Park. His work will begin with a special ‘sapling seminar’ for the residents of the Lower Mill Estate on Sunday 27th May. The ideas inspired by the seminar will be realised in a community sculpture later in the year. The Cotswold Water Park Society gratefully acknowledges the support of Lower Mill Estate towards this project.
Patrick will then work on site in Keynes Country Park daily from Monday 28 May - Thursday 31 May from10am and everyone is most welcome to watch this creative designer at work. Check out the events page for more details.
